Recent studies indicate that in clusters of galaxies the correlation between morphology and clustercentric distance is more fundamental than the correlation between morphology and local density. For example, the elliptical fraction is nearly constant at a value of about 15 % in the outer regions of clusters, and only begins to rise rapidly within 0.5 Mpc of the cluster center, reaching values of about 70 % at the center. Whitmore, Gilmore, and Jones (1993) have suggested that this enhancement in the elliptical fraction is actually due to the destruction of spiral and S0 protogalaxies rather than a formation mechanism that favors ellipticals. The material from the destroyed galaxies may form the intracluster medium seen in x-ray observations. In light of these results for clusters, we reexamine the morphology-density relation in three other environments: (1) compact groups, (2) loose groups, and (3) the field. In all three cases we find that the morphology-density relation is very weak or nonexistent. It appears that the only location where the morphological fractions are strongly modified is near the centers of clusters.
