Elias 32 is an intriguing object located in the rho Ophiucus Dark Cloud region at a distance of approximately 160pc. It was first identified as an embedded IR source in 1978 by J.H. Elias (ApJ, 224, 453), undetectable by optical observations. It is presumed to be a pre-main sequence star with a possible disk of accreting matter and perhaps an associated outflow. Observations of this object were made in the infrared on 4 different occasions, twice using the UCLA KCam system on the Lick 1m telescope, once at KPNO on the 4m with the IRIM camera, and once with the KPNO 2.1m telescope using IRIM in conjunction with the Sofpol polarimetry module. Our images clearly show a nebulosity around the central object, with an extent of 33.5 arcsec in diameter with 23 arcsec of that extending to the NNE of the point-like bright source. The polarization data indicate that it is a reflection nebula. Elias 33, another embedded IR source located 32.6 arcsec SE of Elias 32, was used as a calibrator for a Point Spread Function and registration of the images since there is no evidence of an associated nebulosity. The possibility of the two sources being physically related is being investigated since the reddening of Elias 33 indicates that it is a member of the rho Oph dark cloud. More detailed results will be presented at the conference.
