We report on observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 in the 21-cm line of HI, made with the NRAO-Very Large Array. Three array configurations were combined, totalling 17 hours of observing time. The spatial resolution of the final images is about 8 arcsec or 700 parsec at an assumed distance of 18 Mpc. We reached an rms noise level of 1.2 mJy beam(-1) in 5.2 km s(-1) wide velocity channels. The aim of our study is to determine the morphology and kinematics of the disks of galaxies with an active nucleus in order to compare them with those of well studied normal galaxies. Studies of the gaseous component hold out the possibility of identifying the cause of the infall of gas to the central region, as caused by bars or tidal interaction, shedding light on the mechanism which is responsible for feeding the central monster. We present images of the integrated HI distribution which we compare to published optical, infrared and CO maps. The HI distribution shows a pronounced ring extending from a radius of 30 arcsec to 180 arcsec. Most of the bright optical emission and the CO ring lie within the HI ring. The HI velocity field indicates a rapid rise, solid body rotation, to a maximum of 220 km s(-1) followed by a gradual falling and flattening off to 150 km s(-1) at the last measured point. The galaxy is clearly warped beyond a radius of 80 arcsec. The radio continuum image is dominated by a strong, 3.5 Jy core against which HI absorption has been detected, spanning some 300 km s(-1) and showing evidence for inflow.
