We introduce a new model for low column density Lyalpha clouds. We treat both expansion of clouds and nonuniformity of key physical parameters inside clouds. First we solve the problem of quasi self--similar expansion of isothermal and adiabatic clouds using spherical symmetry, neglecting gravity and external pressure. Using these results we calculate the number of lines observed as a function of both the column density and redshift. We also calculate the Doppler broadening of lines due to the expansion. Comparing our results to recent Lyalpha forest observations at both high and low redshifts we find good agreement. Our model can be used to model lower mass clouds where self gravitation can be neglected. Comparison between the adiabatic and isothermal cases is also done.
