We report the results of the first year of a monitoring program of 41 young stellar objects for H_2O maser emission with the Haystack 37m telescope. Deeply embedded objects with IRAS luminosities ranging from <1 Lsun to 160 Lsun (with a median of 15 Lsun ) were selected from molecular clouds within 450 pc of the Sun. In addition to a Class I spectral energy distribution, sources were required to display evidence for energetic outflows. With a typical RMS noise of 0.1 K (0.8 Jy), we have detected highly variable maser emission toward 14 YSOs; one-half of these are new detections. Three YSOs previously reported to exhibit H_2O maser emission have yet to be detected in our survey. Multiple velocity components are common in the spectra and individual features often have lifetimes of one month or less. The lowest luminosity source in our survey associated with maser emission is the protostellar candidate VLA 1623 in Ophiuchus which has an Lbol of <1 Lsun (Andre \etal 1992, ApJ, in press). The properties and evolutionary states of low-luminosity YSOs displaying maser emission will be discussed.
