The outburst of Nova Cygni 1992 has presented an excellent opportunity to study the outburst, energetics, and physical development of a bright and relatively nearby ONeMg nova across the electromagnetic spectrum. Many of these observations have been obtained in a coordinated fashion using a variety of modern ground-- and space--based instruments. At optical wavelengths, the brightness of the nova and its slow development make it an ideal object for photometry and low and high resolution spectroscopy on small to moderate aperture telescopes. Spectroscopic observations of Nova Cygni 1992 have been obtained at several North American observatories including the Lowell Observatory, Washburn Observatory, the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, and the David Dunlap Observatory. In addition, the light curve of Nova Cygni 1992 has been monitored by the AAVSO. A review of the early development of Nova Cygni 1992, comparisons with several recent novae, and a discussion of several outstanding problems from an optical perspective will be presented. These observations, when combined with the results at other wavelengths and with models, should lead to accurate estimates of the chemical abundances and the ejected mass, as well as a description of the spatial, dynamical, and physical structure of the ejected envelope.
