The envelope of SN1987A will strike its circumstellar ring ca. AD2004+/- 2 years. The forward shock that enters the ring will radiate luminous ( ~ 10(36) ergs s(-1) ) UV and optical emission lines for several years. The emission lines from the shocked gas (with half-width ~ 200 km s({-) 1}) will have complex profiles that will tell us details of the density distribution of gas in the ring. EUV radiation from the shock will ionize and heat unshocked gas in the ring and other nearby circumstellar matter, causing such gas to emit narrow (half-width < 10 km s(-1) ) emission lines. By observing the development of the images in the broad and narrow emission lines we will have a great opportunity to study the structure and understand the origin of the circumstellar ring and its surrounding nebulosity.
