Detailed non-LTE calculations of the interaction between radiation and gas in type Ia supernova (SNe Ia) explosions provide one the most important constraints available on the physical properties of SNe Ia. We present and compare with spectroscopic observations, results of calculations performed for several different models of an exploding Chandrasekhar mass C-O white dwarf, including a detonation model, deflagration models in which the fractal dimension of the flame front is constant, and variable fractal dimension deflagrations in which the subsonic burning front accelerates as the fractal dimension of the front increases, leading to a ``delayed detonation'' explosion. The appearance of these explosions is highly sensitive to both the amount of radioactive (56) Ni produced and other explosive nucleosynthesis products. Currently, the models which best fit the observations are delayed detonations. We present a variety of diagnostics for many properties of the explosion.
