We have examined the Vela 5B ten year history of the soft x-ray transient 4U 1608-52 from 1969 to 1979. In addition to the known outbursts in 1975, 1977 and 1979, the Vela 5B data includes 4 new transient outbursts in 1970 and 1971 not observed by other satellite missions. Analyzing the times of outbursts from 1969 - 1983 (to include the event seen by Tenma), we find that the times of the outbursts are consistent with recurrence intervals of either 75 or 20 days. However, such a short derived recurrence interval leaves many cycles without an outburst. We also present evidence for periods seen in the intensity of one of the outbursts observed in 1970. A power spectrum of the data for that event indicates periods of 4.14 and 5.26 days, from which we infer a beat period of 19.5 days. We interpret these results in terms of the superoutbursts seen in SU Ursa Majoris dwarf novae.
