The stability of the solar tachocline is reviewed with emphasis on magnetic instabilities. The combined results of the last decade show that instabilities are very likely above magnetic field strengths of roughly 1000 Gauss. High-latitude field belts are more easily disturbed by magnetic instability. Nonlinear calculations indicate though that the instabilities of low-latitude fields do not necessarily lead to fully developed turbulence and destruction of the large-scale field by turbulent diffusion.
