The Astronomy Department at the University of Maryland has developed a series of computer based laboratory experiments for use in the introductory course sequence for general students. This is part of an ongoing development of this lab course. The labs run on IBM compatible machines. Specific points to be discussed include why these labs were selected for computer based instruction, how the use of the computer affects what is done in the labs, what works (and doesn't work) in computer based labs and where we would like to go from here.
