I discuss the construction of the fourth-order gravity models with the main stress put onto the brane models of this type. I suggest that these models can naturally be verified observationally by higher-order characteristics of the universe expansion called statefinders (jerk, kerk/snap, lerk/crackle, merk/pop etc.). I tight these to the occurrence of the exotic singularities in the universe, especially, the ones which involve the pressure or its derivatives blow-up only. I comment on a possible occurrence of such singularities in the near future referring to the observational data from supernovae.
