A quantitative analysis of flickering in CVs is presented. Some empirical properties of the flickering in the light curves of some CVs are determined on the basis of a formal and objective definition. On the basis of simultaneous observations at various wavelengths it is shown that the spectrum of the flickering light source is variable in time as well as from one object to another. The analysis of the amplitudes of the flickering reveals that a significant part of the total light of a CV has its origin in the flickering light source, which sometimes even dominates the optical radiation. Several statistical characteristic properties of the flickering are defined and analyzed, with emphasis on the effect of the flickering, the time scales, and the global distribution. Significant global correlations between parameters are also discussed.
