The colliding pair of galaxies NGC 4038/39 has been observed at H-alpha wavelength with a scanning Perot-Fabry interferometer. The velocity field of the ionized gas in the central part of the object (2 arcmin x 2 arcmin) has been drawn from 4195 pixels with a spatial resolution of 0.91 arcsec and a spectral resolution better than 16 km/s. Comparison with CO observations for NGC 4039 shows a good agreement between both velocity fields. Our velocity field shows that the encounter is in an advanced state. Comparison with theoretical models found in the literature confirms previous suggestions that the mass of both galaxies should be lowered, with a rough estimate around 4 x 10 exp 10 solar masses. The geometry of the encounter should also be revised, with a disk plane of NGC 4038 closer to the orbital plane than previously assumed. Retouching the geometry and scaling down the velocities and distances of the models should be sufficient for a good matching of the observed kinematics.
