Relatively high excitation emission lines of [Ne III], [Fe III] and He I in the inner ejecta of eta Car provide clues to the source of the ionization and the nature of the possible hot companion star because they represent nebular-like photoionized regions. This characteristic distinguishes these lines from the hundreds of low excitation emission lines in eta Car's spectrum. We have analyzed high spatial resolution spectra of these lines in the inner ejecta obtained with HST/STIS. The data cover an entire 5.5 yr cycle. We have mapped the distribution of emission from these lines in the sub-arcsecond environment of eta Car's inner ejecta. We discuss the flux variations of these lines over the spectroscopic cycle and implications for the ionization source.
