The evolution of galaxies appears to be linked to outflows produced in active phases of the central galactic nucleus. The paradigm that has emerged for the production of outflows and jets from AGN involves an interaction between magnetized accretion flows and rotating supermassive black holes, known as the Blandford-Znajek and Blandford-Payne mechanisms. It is shown that under certain restrictive assumptions about the dynamical character of the flow in the regions close to the black hole, the power produced in such systems depends tightly on the spin parameter of the black holes. The consequence of this scenario is that the cosmological evolution of galaxies is intimately linked to the evolution of black hole spin, implying in turn, that the properties of the general relativistic spacetime metric that dominate the region very close to the center of galaxies, are ultimately responsible for determining the properties of the galaxy as a whole.
