Luminous Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) and BAL QSOs share several characteristics indicating a possible relation of these classes of active galactic nuclei (AGN). For example, similar high Eddington accretion rates support the idea that these AGN are in an early stage of their active phase. Generally, the broad and blue-shifted absorption troughs in BAL QSO are associated with high velocity outflows along the line of sight. While emission line variability is a well-studied property of AGN there are only a few reports for variable absorption. We propose to observe a sample of BAL QSOs and luminous NLS1s using the 4 m telescope with the R-C - spectrograph. We want to revisit these AGN to examine whether existing broad absorption features have changed, new broad absorption structures have emerged, shifts in velocity space have happened, or even whether a transition from one type into the other can be witnessed. This project will provide important constraints on the possible connection of NLS1s and BAL QSOs and valuable insights to understand the evolution of AGN, in particular early stages of the active phase.
