Three AO instruments are regularly used at the ESO VLT: NACO - ESO's multi-purpose AO facility, SINFONI - an integral-field spectrograph, and CRIRES - a high resolution long slit spectrograph. NACO and SINFONI can be used with either natural guide stars or an artificial laser guide star.
The talk will give an of the overview of these instruments, focusing on their unique capabilities, such as the infrared Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor of NACO, and highlighting the key scientific discoveries that have been made with these instruments.
In addition to these instruments, we will present results from MAD - ESOs multi-conjugate AO test instrument - and summarize the expected performance of the AO facilities that will become available during the next few years, such as the ground layer AO facility using a deformable secondary mirror.
