High resolution spectroscopy of the interstellar medium has identified approximately 150 distinct molecules including an ever increasing number of many atom, stable, saturated species with complex spectra. The most prevalent of these, CH3CN, CH3OH, C2H3CN, C2H5CN, CH3CHO, CH3OCH3, CH3OOCH, SO2 and their isotopologues are often present at large column densities and high levels of excitation. Even at modest levels of excitation almost all of these molecules exhibit spectral features that exceed the current capability of molecular physics to adequately model their spectra. For astronomy the lack of comprehensive and precise predictions results in line confusion which greatly complicates many investigations and often compromises the detection of other trace species. Improvements in submillimeter technology have made it possible to employ the infrared strategy of collecting the complete spectrum. The presence of a complete spectrum opens the possibility of new approaches to line lists and makes it possible to quickly understand the problems in existing models and is leading a number of promising solutions. The state of the art in laboratory spectroscopy, spectral analysis, and an inventory of applicable unsolved molecular physics problems will be presented in the context of these most prevalent astronomical species.
