The Chandra COSMOS Survey (C-COSMOS) adds high resolution X-ray imaging to the rich COSMOS data set. The depth of C-COSMOS was chosen to 'break through' the flux level where the AGN creating the bulk of the X-ray background dominate, and so detect significant numbers of starburst galaxies, up to redshifts 0.9, comparable with the depth of the COSMOS galaxy surveys.
C-COSMOS was completed in June 2007 and covers the central area of the COSMOS field. 1761 point sources were detected above 2e-16 cgs (0.5-2keV). An additional 240 extended sources, groups and clusters of galaxies, were detected in the joint Chandra and XMM dataset. Uniform exposure of 160 ksec was reached over the central 0.5 sq. deg., and 80 ksec over another 0.4 sq. deg.
By going for area over extreme depth, the C-COSMOS X-ray sources are bright enough that 99.7% are detected in one or more bands (I,K, IRAC1, MIPS24) in the existing COSMOS data set. Photometric redshifts good to 15% are immediately available for 95% sources, based on galaxy/AGN template fitting to the 40 point spectral energy distributions, and host galaxy morphologies are known for all z<1 AGNs from the Hubble images.
We describe the most recent C-COSMOS survey results. We identify 16 close AGN pairs, 16 off-nuclear sources in galaxies that are likely ULXs, 250 Extremely Red Objects, 30 XBONGs, and 58 quasars at z>3, including the highest redshift X-ray selected quasar (z=5.44) so far.
