Galaxy Evolution, Infrared Galaxies, Number Counts, Cosmic Background Radiation
Scientific paper
The evolution of the Universe can be regarded as the evolution of galaxies or the cosmic star formation history. Star formation in galaxies has long been studied through their optical properties. However, these days infrared observations are developing rapidly, so that the star formation history of galaxies hidden by dust, say, the dark side of galaxy evolution attracts considerable attention. Here we introduce the method to investigate the galaxy evolution with two fundamental observational data, the infrared galaxy number counts and the cosmic infrared background radiation via model calculations. After discussing some delicate problems in actual analyses, we review the prospects for future observational missions, e.g. ASTRO-F and ALMA.
