A unifying interpretation is given of the dynamical behavior of the plasma and fields during the AMPTE artificial comet experiments (Dec. 27, 1984 and July 18, 1985). In situ plasma measurements obtained with the Ion Release Module (IRM) are included. Phenomena discussed (in order of occurrence) include: diamagnetic cavity formation; return and compression of the magnetic field; and lateral displacement of the comet and formation of the tail. Sweeping the plasma before it, the interplanetary magnetic field quickly - in about 60 seconds penetrated into an initially diamagnetic barium plasma cloud. Over the next 40 seconds, the field was strongly compressed and extended in the flow direction. Ions accelerated by electric polarization fields formed a visible tail at the rear of the cloud and their recoil balanced the magnetic stresses. The dominant lateral motion of the head of the artificial comet is attributed to a recoil of ions extracted by the interplanetary magnetic field.
