Image distortion of a 300mm f/4 photographic lens and Kodak type 2415 35mm roll film has been analysed using a precision X-Y measuring machine. The plate scale between selected pairs of stars was calculated from measured rectangular coordinates of 32 SAO stars. Physical distortion of the film base was found to be negligible compared with off-axis radial distortion of the image. Photographic astrometry of an asteroid (15 Eunomia) was carried out from four exposures made with the 300mm lens using reference stars within one degree of the optical axis. Mean residuals of ±1.4 arcsec in both RA and Dec were derived from calculated positions of the minor planet. It is concluded that precision of measurements is the major factor limiting arcsecond-accurate astrometry from exposures made with 2415 roll film using short focal length objectives.
