The basic ideas of methods of improving the convergence of the expansion of the external potential of a planet in spherical functions are laid out. One of these methods is based on the use of a series in Chebyshev polynomials as the intermediate series, while the second is based on the use of a modification of Lanczos's method of 'economization' of power series. Various forms of generalized potentials are discussed from the aspect of the feasibility of using them to improve the convergence of the expansion of a planetary potential.
