Hydrostatic evolutionary sequences are calculated for massive (greater than 1 solar mass) white dwarfs accreting with a solar mixture of elements. It is found that the interflash period depends on both the mass accretion rate and the luminosity of the white dwarf. This agrees with previous calculations of the time scale to runaway. Calculations are combined with earlier results and are able to predict that the classical nova outburst must occur on low-luminosity, massive white dwarfs which are accreting mass at low rates.
