In the present investigation of the effect of adiabatic jet expansion on helical twisting, in view of the spatial growth of the fundamental helical mode, it is noted that harmonic components propagate with invariant omega-R/u, where R and u are respectively the jet's radius and velocity, and can remain at nearly the instantaneous, fastest spatially growing frequency. It is found that neither the phase nor group velocity furnishes an appropriate convection speed that relates temporally computed growth to the spatially computed growth of a harmonic component near maximum growth. It is also demonstrated that decrease in the growth rate of a helical harmonic component propagating along an adiabatically expanding jet implies an upper limit to the amplitude, even in the absence of nonlinear effects.
