We report on two recent long X-ray(/TeV) observations of the bright blazar Mkn 421, performed with BeppoSAX in April 2000 and RossiXTE in March 2001, with simultaneous optical and TeV observations. The goal is to exploit the dramatic broadband spectral variability to constrain the physical conditions and processes responsible for particle acceleration in blazar jets. .
