A variety of data are used in order to determine the number of Cygnus X-3-like gamma ray sources in the Galaxy, both at the present time and in the past. The firmest number relates to contemporary sources and the number here is on the order of 20. A method of studying the numbers which have existed in the past - by way of high latitude Inverse Compton photons - is enunciated in some detail; application to the currently available data suggests that there may have been the equivalent of about 200 sources (presumably a much smaller number of much more powerful sources) over the period from 10,000 to 100,000 years ago, but this number is very uncertain. Nevertheless, the method suggested seems valid and offers the distinct possibility of determining past activity in the peta-electron-volt (1 PeV = 10 to the 15th eV) region when experimental results of sufficient precision become available.
