Images of the Southern Hemisphere acquired by two DMSP satellites are used to study the occurrence and recurrence rates of various levels of auroral activity. Seven hundred forty nine images taken by satellites 5528 and 7529 over a 5-month period were classified as showing active (A), moderate (M), quiet (Q) or no (N) auroral activity. Overall occurrence rates of A, M, Q and N conditions are found to correspond to 17%, 55%, 16% and 11%, respectively. After one DMSP orbit (102 min), both A and Q conditions are found to recur about 50% of the time, which is significantly greater than would be expected on the basis of their overall rates. Comparison of the occurrence and recurrence rates for the M classification indicates that moderate levels of auroral activity tend to occur randomly. The overall occurrence rates derived from DMSP images are found to be in general agreement with all-sky camera images, although the latter indicate the typical duration of auroral activity to be much shorter than the DMSP orbital period.
