The Milagro Gamma-Ray Observatory is the world's first large-area water Cherenkov detector capable of continuously monitoring the overhead sky for sources of TeV gamma rays. The detector's unique design provides for unprecedented sensitivity compared to traditional sparse sampling arrays. As a result, Milagro has made a host of discoveries including the detection of several new gamma-ray sources and the detection of diffuse emission from the Galactic plane. The HAWC detector is a natural extension of the Milagro design. HAWC will be constructed as a joint Mexican-US collaboration on the Sierra Negra Mountain in Mexico at an elevation of 4100 m. The design and location of HAWC was optimized using the lessons learned from Milagro and will be 15 times more sensitive than Milagro when completed. In this paper, we briefly review Milagro results and discuss the physics we can do with HAWC.
