Using the atmosphere-hydrosphere component of a paleoclimate model, the model sensitivity on a short time scale to changes in the parameterization of the surface albedo is examined in the context of response to orbitally produced insolation anomalies. The model component, based on the global zonally averaged model of M. Suarez and I. Held (1979), is an energy balance model with two atmospheric layers, a mixed-layer ocean, a snow mechanism, and sea ice budget. A crude approximation of the variation of the ice and snow surface albedo between a melting and nonmelting surface is incorporated into the model. The effect of the variable albedo, primarily in the summer half year, is to approximately double the sensitivity of the model to specific orbital insolation anomalies compared to a model in which the melting effect is omitted.
