Measurements on 1132 plates yield new details about the active and
inactive states of Her X-1/HZ Her in the past. The transitions between A
and I states proceed within several days. The orbital light curve for
the inactive state is presented and discussed. Altogether 4A and 4I
states were found between 1928 and 1979.
