The determination of the D/H ratio in comets is an exciting aim all the more because no evaluation or significant upper limit has been established up to now. In the present paper we discuss the comparative performances of future UV instrumentation to perform this objective. An objective grating instrument has been demonstrated in a previous paper to have large advantages offering a high sensitivity for extented sources along with information on both the spatial and spectral characteristics of the observed sources. Through the discussion of a method of observation suitable for that particular objective along with the questions set by this method, we confirm those advantages but also indicate their limits. It is shown that for being able to separate the contribution of the D Lyman α emission to the image obtained on the detector, either a sharp variation in the hydrogen distribution or a clear spatial differentiation between the H and D emission patterns is needed. If achieved, a careful analysis of the data will allow to study the D/H emission ratio and the comparative spatial distributions which should lead to the determination of the D/H abundance ratio.
