Image reconstruction from Hipparcos scans is discussed. Although the Hipparcos telescope is designed as a conventional optical imaging device, its combination with a modulating grid in the focal plane means that the whole instrument can be considered as a phase interferometer. Image reconstruction can exploit digital image processing techniques. Brightness distribution, for example, can be reconstructed using radio interferometry approaches to aperture synthesis. The possibility of detecting faint companions depends on the signal to noise ratio of the map obtained from the inverse transformations of sample points collected during the missions. Many binaries with separations in the interval from 0.05 to 0.5 arcsec could be discovered by Hipparcos.
