Ground based investigations of CCS are reviewed and the Hipparcos satellite, CCS observing program is outlined. The peculiar chemical composition of CCS makes spectral interpretation based on model atmospheres difficult and only one trigonometric parallax for CCS of temperature 3000 K is available. The value of bolometric luminosity data is lessened by inhomogeneous sampling. Effective temperatures derived from photometry, and distances derived from proper motions and spectral energy distributions are fairly satisfactory, but Hipparcos can improve accuracy by up to a factor of 10. Hipparcos data are needed to investigate CCS mass range, and the amplitude of mass loss during the advanced stages of giant star evolution. The identification of carbon Miras with CCS of low mass envelopes can also be studied.
