The status of trigonometric parallax measurements and their statistical interpretation are reviewed. Detailed studies of the dependence on composition and age of the structure of the main sequence of stars brighter than magnitude V = 5.5, within 100 parsecs of the Sun are proposed. Hipparcos provides absolute parallaxes, avoiding uncertainties inherent in ground based techniques due to reduction from relative values. Stars can be chosen from the Michigan spectral survey, or by a criterion, such as proper motion, for areas not covered by the Michigan catalog. Parallaxes can be used to check the accuracy of cosmic distance indicators and to check luminosity calibrations.
