High quality spectroscopic observations have been obtained of the very early rapidly rotating Be star 59 Cyg during an active phase characterized by spectacular emission-line variations and a 160 day shell episode. A detailed spectroscopic history of the star is given for the period prior to the current outburst: the 1974-75 (second) shell. For the current outburst, line profiles and equivalent width and velocity data provide a comprehensive description of the nature and time scale of the spectral variations in the optical region throughout pre-shell, shell, and post-shell phases. Shell absorption lines are shown to display variations in strength and velocity which have a time scale and form radically different from the variations seen in Pleione and omicron-And, the only stars for which episodes of this type have been well observed.
