One of the key scientific objectives of the new generation high energy instruments is the quest for signatures from the extragalactic background light (EBL) at UV/optical/IR energies and its evolution by means of photon-photon absorption over extragalactic distances.
I will discuss the various methods proposed, and biases that may be introduced when studying the evolution of the EBL with capable γ-ray observatories like e.g. GLAST or CTA, where the γ-ray horizon is probed by means of statistical analysis of absorption features in AGN spectra at various redshifts. In particular, the effect of the redshift-dependence of ``local opacity'' in γ-ray loud quasars due to possible γ-ray absorption through photon-photon pair production of jet photons in the external photon environments (accretion disk, broad-line region radiation field) on evolutionary studies of the EBL is highlighted.
