The fragmentation of a uniform, nearly pressure free, collapsing spheroidal cloud is studied, both from rest and from an initial state of uniform expansion. It is found that, relative to the case of a spherical collapse, the fragmentation efficiency is considerably increased. Fluctuations that are oblate relative to the main flow grow more rapidly than relatively prolate fluctuations. These conclusions are not significantly modified by the effects of a finite uniform pressure, provided that the initial configuration is well above the Jeans limit. While inclusion of more realistic effects associated with density gradients, magnetic fields, cooling, and opacity are likely to modify the cloud evolution, it seems difficult to avoid the conclusion that fragmentation down to protostellar mass scales should occur during the dynamical collapse either of interstellar or primordial clouds
