A non-nuclear theory is proposed to account for the anomalous distribution of elements observed in some stars. It is suggested that diffusion of elements occurs in the envelope in response to the opposing forces of gravitation and radiation. This diffusion theory would supplement the nucleosynthesis theory by accounting for metal element concentrations which exceed concentrations resulting from nucleosynthesis. Stars with an anomalously high concentration of a metal (the pattern differs from star to star) are comparatively common among stars with temperatures greater than 7,000 K and with rotational velocities about a third of normal.
