Problems and advantages in the use of the earth, traveling through space, as a space probe for the study of interplanetary matter in situ are discussed, with emphasis on traversal of meteor paths by the earth. Use of artificial satellites and of deep-space probes is also discussed. Satellite-mediated investigations of bright meteors, studies of meteors crossing the earth's orbit, deep-space probes exploring matter in the ecliptic plane, probes dispatched to comet orbits or points of apparent origin of meteor showers, and research utilizing probes launched along the orbit of the parent comet to a meteor shower, are discussed briefly.
