An information theory is developed for optimizing distances between neighboring points of gravimetric observations of the lunar surface so that redundant points will not affect the field profile obtained. The theory is applicable to studying the statistical characteristics of gravitational field anomalies on the lunar surface. It is suggested that the technique may also be applied to studies of the earth or Martian surfaces.
