The various aspects related to a colonization of space by the human race are examined, taking into account the motivations of the first generation of colonists, problems related to life in new environments, the psychology of the frontier, evolutionary changes within the colonies, the biological dimension, the adaptation of the colonists to environmental changes, developments toward colony independence, political-military interactions, and the frontier's effect on the earth. The limits of human expansion are considered. Assuming that the physical barriers concerning an expansion of the human race into the universe can be overcome, the extent and the characteristics of the human colonization of the Galaxy will be determined by the presence or absence of other intelligent species and the relative position of the civilization of these species to human civilization.
