The stability of long tethered satellite systems is analyzed on the basis of the equations for coupled librational and vibrational motion in the Lagrangian formulation. The variables characterizing the orbital motion are expanded in perturbation series, and the first-order perturbations are analyzed. A numerical example is treated, considering a Space Shuttle/subsatellite system with a tether 1 mm in diameter and density of 2 kg/km with length varying from 1 to 100 km. The variation of the amplitude of resonant oscillatory perturbation after one year, caused by longitudinal vibrations, is calculated for various altitudes and cable lengths.
