In a shock wave propagating in a radiation transmitting medium, the plasma can undergo substantial compression, accompanied by changes (of several orders of magnitude) in the magnetic field. The thermal energy of the wave is dissipated (from the front) in lines of atomic hydrogen. (This may explain the intense H-alpha radiation from a flare.) Charged particles from the suprathermal background with an intial energy of 10 times the temperature in the region of the front permeate the front; if the Larmor radius of the particles is comparable or smaller than the characteristic scale of the magnetic field, the energy will vary approximately as the magnetic field. In the present paper, it is shown that if the Larmor radius is greater than the characteristic scale, or if the magnetic field varies continuously according to an exponential law, superadiabatic particle acceleration may occur throughout the front. The particle energy is then proportional to the square of magnetic field variation.
