The design of the Ariane, a three-stage rocket, is described, and a timetable for the development of this European rocket, which is intended to launch a 750-kg geostationary satellite in 1980, is presented. Design and performance parameters are provided. The organization of the project, directed by the French CNES, is explained. One goal of the research is to develop a cost-competitive rocket; eventual production, amount of use, and future improvements are considered.
