The total shocked and fluorescent molecular hydrogen 1-0 S(1) line
luminosities from Orion have been measured to be about 2.5 solar
luminosity and about 2.0 solar luminosity, respectively. The
implications for using Orion to study the interstellar medium in
galaxies is discussed.
