The universe today seems totally ionised, however, we know from standard cosmological models that it has underwent a phase transition between ionisation and neutrality at the recombination era. There has been, between these two epochs, a reionisation process from which we have several observational evidences. This reionisation could have been either homogeneous or inhomogeneous. In each case, we will review the basic assumptions that have been made to model this physical process and we will discuss the main effects of the reionisation on the CMB.
