The subject of mass return to the interstellar medium by the winds of massive stars is reviewed from the viewpoint of calculations of stellar evolution with mass loss, combined with the birth rate function for stars of different masses (IMF). The uncertainties due to the IMF and in the assumed mass loss rates are discussed. The corresponding energy deposition rates from stellar winds are also estimated.
