Simulations of the Coarse Track mode, one of the two guiding modes of the Hubble Space Telescope Fine Guidance Sensor used for acquisition of astronomical data, are presented. They show that the precision of the Coarse Track mode is influenced by one adjustable parameter and that it is 12 milli-arc seconds (for default operating conditions). An improvement of the precision of the Coarse Track mode with a factor of two is considered possible. It is suggested that the use of the Coarse Track mode in place of the Fine Lock mode would result in an approximately 1/3 reduction of engineering overhead per scientific target acquisition and that the improved Coarse Track mode could become the default guiding mode of the Hubble Space Telescope, adding approximately 500 hours of scientific observation time per year to the current total of 2500-3000.
